The latest VIPRE definition update incorrectly detects the ThinkPad Active Protection System as a virus and deletes critical system files related to the APS (this conveniently happened over my July 4th holiday weekend). Now, I have several laptops coming back from from all over the nation. Nice!
I have put together a .ZIP of the files that were deleted:
ThinkPad X61 series:

ThinkPad x60 series:

ThinkPad R52 series:

Remove the drive from the ThinkPad and use a SATA to USB adaptor to attach it to another system.
DISABLE VIPRE!
Unzip the files and copy them back
Re-install the hard drive and boot back into Windows
As soon as the Windows splash screen goes away, VIPRE will try to run a scan and delete the files - Cancel this scan immediately!
Log into Windows
Open VIPRE, and un-quarantine that is related to Protection System and add them to the Allowed list
If you are using the Enterprise Edition, add Protection System to the Admin Known Good
Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any issues or need help.
You may need to remove the HD password in the BIOS to access the HD through a SATA/IDE/USB adapter on another machine…
T60 series. 5 in our shop all had problem. All have power-on and hard drive passwords set and Full Disk Encryption drives so nothing can be done to the drive outside of the system it belongs to. All our systems blue-screened in Vista Ultimate after Vipre quarantined these same related files.
My solution has been to use the Thinkpad Rescue and Recovery software to restore the operating system to a state prior to the 4th. This allows windows to boot up again. I then logged in and as described above, quickly try to disable Vipre and stop any scan in progress. After several variations on this theme and having to repeat it multiple times because the problem wasn’t completely eliminated due to timing of def updates and scanning after the restore, I have settled on removing Vipre from the machine as soon as I can get logged in. I then restart, do a complete Thinkpad System Update and complete Windows update. This may be overkill but it has worked and I want to make sure there is no chance of the problem resurfacing. I will reinstall Vipre when/if my confidence is restored.
Now is not the time to pour fuel on the fire but Jesus H Christ Sunbelt! How many Thinkpads do you think are out there? A little (lot) more testing please!
brilliant. i had a t43 and the t60 files you provided worked for me. thank you very much for posting. put up a bigger link to your rss feed. i’m subscribing, but had to hunt to the bottom of the page
Anyone have any files for the newer T400 and T500’s? I’m able to fix the T60’s with the files that you provided but no luck on the newer Lenovo’s.
